WORKSHOP BASICS:
Workshop Title: Rediscover the River: A 3-Day Mississippi River Expedition
Workshop Date(s): July 29-31, 2007
Workshop Beginning Location: Burlington, IA
Workshop Ending Location: Rock Island, IL

Fee: The entire workshop is FREE OF CHARGE. However, you will be responsible for ALL lodging costs throughout the event, transportation to and from embarking point of the workshop, all dinners but one, and any fees associated with taking the course for graduate or professional development credit.


WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Tentative Schedule and Topics:

Day 1- The workshop will begin in Burlington and will focus on the natural and cultural history of the Mississippi River, as the barge travels to its second port in Keithsburg, IL.  Topics covered may include: Archaeology/Native Americans, the Steamboat Era, Early Explorers, the Rivers Influence on Literature and Music, the Formation of the Mississippi River/Geology, Fossils, etc.

Day 2-Will focus on the river ecosystem including aquatic and wild inhabitants, riverbottom forests and modern day changes on the Mississippi. Beginning in Keithsburg and ending near Muscatine, IA, topics may include: native mussels and fish, invasive species, river navigation, pollution and water quality, native trees, plants, and wildflowers as well as a forage for wild edibles (with a cookout at night to eat the goodies we collected!)

Day 3-The river as an integrating concept and river stewardship. Taking place near Rock Island, IL we will discover ways to use the river to teach ANY discipline. Furthermore, we will perform activities of river stewardship and perform a small scale river cleanup and/or tree planting/prairie restoration project. After the day is complete, we will return you to your vehicles.
