WORKSHOP BASICS:
Workshop Title: The Mississippi River: Shifting Currents
Workshop Date(s): July 11th-12th, 2007
Workshop Meeting Location: St. Louis, MO
Time: 10a-5p, but we encourage you to arrive early for a tour of the Living Lands & Waters barges!!!

Target Audience: 6-12 Science and Social Science Teachers

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This workshop will take place aboard Living Lands & Waters floating classroom, barges, and aluminum plate boats. Weather and river permitting, the morning session will take place inside the classroom with the afternoon spent in plate boats visiting various points of interest along the river.

The goal of this workshop is to familiarize the audience with the history and current status of the Mississippi by covering a variety of topics addressing the changes that this river has experienced over the last century. Those in attendance will learn and see firsthand this ancient river, the ways this river has changed over time, and how these changes have affected the plant, animal, and human lives that it supports.


TOPICS TO BE COVERED

The Natural History of the Mississippi River, the cultural history of this river, the river as a Natural Resource, Recreational and Commercial Uses of the River, Impacts to River Ecology, River Stewardship, and MUCH MORE!!!


DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
Location: St. Louis Riverfront, St. Louis MO
DATE: July 15th

From S/SW- Take I-55 N. or I-44 W. into St. Louis. Take the I-70 W. exit (Exit 209B) on the left. Take the Memorial Drive exit (Exit 251C) towards Downtown/Arch/Stadium. Take the ramp toward Arch/Stadium. Turn slight LEFT onto Memorial Drive. Take a RIGHT after the first traffic signal following the Arch ( Washington St.). Follow down to riverfront and take another RIGHT onto Leonor K. Sullivan Blvd.) Park in riverfront parking. Don’t forget to print out a parking pass to attendant to ensure free parking on the riverfront.

From Illinois- Take I-70 W., I-64 W., or I-55 S. towards St. Louis, crossing the Poplar Street Bridge. Take the first exit after crossing the Mississippi River, Memorial Drive. Stay to the right to follow Memorial Drive. (Follow signs to the Arch.) Take a RIGHT at the first traffic signal following the Arch ( Washington Avenue). Follow down to riverfront and take another RIGHT onto Leonor K.Sullivan Blvd. Park in riverfront parking. Don’t forget to print out a parking pass to attendant to ensure free parking on the riverfront.

From W/NW- Take I-70 E. or HWY 40 E. towards downtown St. Louis. Take the Broadway exit (the last Missouri exit.) At stop sign, take a LEFT on to Cerre Street. Take Cerre Street east to 4 th St (a one-way street heading north). Take 4 th Street to traffic signal at Chestnut Street (by the Adams Mark Hotel). Take a RIGHT and cross over I-70 overpass. At the stoplight, take a LEFT onto Memorial Drive. At the next traffic signal, take a RIGHT onto Washington St. and follow down to riverfront. Take another RIGHT onto the Leonor K. Sullivan Blvd. Park in riverfront parking. Don’t forget to print out a parking pass to attendant to ensure free parking on the riverfront.
