Illinois River Cleanup

Illinois River Cleanup PhotoWhat is it?
Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) will be working their way down the Illinois River on the infamous River Cleanup and barges beginning in May. Volunteers from the surrounding communities are needed to lend a hand in our on-going mission to clean up the waterways of the Midwest.  We are looking for volunteers from the surrounding communities to lend a hand in our on-going mission to clean up the waterways of the Midwest.
Volunteers will meet LL&W staff at a predetermined site. At the site, volunteers will hand in liability waivers, fill their water bottles, and grab a life jacket and gloves. LL&W will give a short safety speech and a plan for the cleanup.
After everyone is registered and briefed, we will load into boats and head to the cleanup site. Once we arrive at the site, you will be given garbage bags and directions on where to pile the garbage for pickup by LL&W crew. The cleanup will last for a couple hours then everyone will head back in boats to the original meeting site.

What do volunteers need to bring?

  • Water Bottle:  Please bring a refillable water bottle; if you do not have one, we will have small cups for water.
  • Clothing:  Be sure to dress appropriately; wear comfortable clothes preferably layers.  Remember you can always take layers off.  Long pants and closed-toes shoes are a MUST!  You should also wear shoes that can get wet and/or muddy (rubber boots are best!), and you may want to bring an extra set of clothing to leave in your car in case you get really dirty, muddy or wet and need to change before leaving.  If rain is possible you may want to bring rain gear.
  • Waiver:  Please print the “General Liability Form” above.  Read, sign and give it to Shanon Reineke the morning of the event.  Please date the waiver for the day of the event, not the day you sign it.  If any volunteers are under the age of 18 they will need to be accompanied by an adult, who will need to sign their waiver.  If you forget your waiver, extras will be available at the event.

What is provided?
We will provide gloves, trash bags, shovels, life jackets and plenty of water.

When and Where?
Cleanup dates and locations to be determined. Visit our calendar for up to date event information.

Weather Cancellation Policy:
In case of lightening, flooding or high winds, LL&W will call off the event at the site.  There will be no rain date.

How do I sign up?
It’s simple! Just click on the “Register On-Line” button below to access the on-line registration form. There you will need to enter your name, contact information, and select your preferred date and location from the pull down menu.  You will also have the option to sign up for a group, if you choose to organize volunteers from school, church, your family, friends, etc.  If you don’t have access to email or have a question related to the cleanup, please feel free to call or email Shanon Reineke of Living Lands & Waters.  Her contact information is as follows:
