Louisville Xstream Cleanup
Saturday, March 15
8:30am to 1:00pm Eastern Time Zone
What is the Xtream Cleanup?
The Xstream Cleanup is a community-based event focusing on cleaning up the waterways in the Louisville metro area. This event is spearheaded by Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) and sponsored by the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), Metro Parks, American Commercial Lines, Jefferson County Soil & Water Conservation District (JCSWCD), and Anheuser-Busch Companies. Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning up several different sites.
Who can volunteer?
We accept volunteers of all ages and abilities. However, some sites will be more appropriate for children and those with limited aptitudes. This level of difficulty is indicated in the site descriptions below. All volunteers under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult. If you are under 18, please print off the General Liability Release form and have a parent or legal guardian sign it. Please bring the signed form to the event with you.
What is expected of volunteers?
Volunteers will be working with hosting organizations to remove garbage (tires, appliances, barrels, plastic bottles, etc.) that is polluting YOUR waterways and YOUR environment. All volunteers will be asked to meet at 8:30am at the designated site they have chosen. Each site will have a coordinator who will go over any safety concerns, direct volunteers to locations of garbage, and provide instruction on refuse collection and placement.
What do volunteers need to bring?
Wear warm clothes, preferably comfortable layers. The weather in March is unpredictable and often chilly, so be sure to dress appropriately. Long pants and closed-toes shoes are a MUST! You should also wear shoes that can get wet and/or muddy (rubber boots are best!). You may want to bring an extra set of clothing to leave in your car as you may get really dirty or wet and need to change before leaving. We will provide gloves, trash bags, shovels, life jackets and plenty of water. You may bring your own items if you prefer. Bring rain gear if there is a chance of rain.
Weather Cancellation Policy:
In the instance that there is lightening, flooding or high winds, we will call off the cleanup at the site. There will be no rain date.
Site Locations:
Below are descriptions of each Xstream Cleanup site, with an approximate number of volunteers needed for each site. Please click on the site location for driving directions. Each site is rated on the level of difficulty.
Light duty sites: Best for children and those with limited abilities. These sites have relatively small and/or light garbage, found along flat terrain.
Moderate duty sites: Primarily smaller garbage with a few larger items such as tires, light furniture, etc. Majority of terrain is flat or small/medium inclines; it may have some slightly unstable terrain (i.e. rocks, gravel).
Heavy duty sites: These sites are not good for children or those with limited agility. These sites have large amounts of big/heavy garbage (i.e. barrels, appliances, large tires, etc.) that may need digging out. Some heavy duty sites have fairly steep banks and/or unstable terrain (i.e. along the rip-rap on a levee).
Please be sure to choose a site that fits your ability. If you have any questions about the sites, please contact the project coordinator, listed below.
