ABOUT LIVING LANDS & WATERS:

Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of America's major rivers and their watersheds. Our mission is to actively engage individuals to participate in the cleanup and restoration of the natural environment. In line with our commitment to education, LL&W is thrilled to introduce the Mississippi River Institute Floating Classroom, a traveling educational initiative aimed at inspiring high school students to explore river-related career opportunities.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Living Lands & Waters is seeking a passionate, self-motivated individual to fill the role of Mississippi River Institute Manager. This dynamic position involves traveling along the Mississippi River with the unique floating classroom, coordinating logistics, and facilitating educational classes for young adult students, and facilitating community reservations. The ideal candidate will be a creative and driven individual who can lead this program with creative freedom and minimal direction.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Travel and Logistics:

  • Coordinate travel plans and port schedules for the Mississippi River Institute Floating Classroom with the assistance of LL&W upper management.
  • Ensure the seamless operation and maintenance of the Floating Classroom during travel and portage.
  • Act as the on-site contact for communities and schools along the route.
  • Assist with the coordination of transportation for classes.

Curriculum Development:

  • Develop an engaging and comprehensive curriculum focused on fostering awareness and appreciation of our nation's riverways.
  • Design and implement activities that inspire students to explore and understand the significance of river ecosystems.
  • Assist in designing and implementing an aptitude assessment to help narrow students’ vision toward river-related careers.
  • Create modules that expand students' knowledge of diverse career opportunities related to rivers.

Class Facilitation:

  • Conduct interactive and educational classes for high school students aboard the Floating Classroom.
  • Foster an inclusive and participatory learning environment.
  • Collaborate with educators, guest speakers, and experts to enhance the learning experience.
  • Facilitate on-the-water experiences with students in LL&W’s 15-passenger canoes.

Community Engagement:

  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, communities, and local organizations along the Mississippi River.
  • Organize outreach events and promote the Floating Classroom to maximize community involvement.

Other:

  • Position is not limited to the above responsibilities. It may, on occasion, include partaking in alternate outreach events (tradeshows, networking events, etc.), LL&W environmental initiatives and volunteer events, and alternate responsibilities for the betterment of the organization.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS & HOUSING

Relocation is required based on where the barge is stationed. Focused on the Mississippi River, you can expect living in the surrounding areas of St. Louis, MO, Memphis, TN, East Moline, IL, and St. Paul, MN, for up to 6 months in each, rotating through different cities along the Mississippi River. LL&W will cover basic housing expenses.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or a related field. (Preferred)
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and classroom facilitation. (Preferred)
  • Comfort with technology and proficiency in its usage is necessary.
  • Strong organizational and logistical coordination skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Willingness to travel extensively along the Mississippi River.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.

Additionally, applicants must be 21 or older with a valid driver's license.

PAY:

From $50,000 per year. Negotiable. The salary structure and benefits will be discussed during your interview.
